5 Tips To Make Great Holiday Season' Family Pictures

Hello Everyone,

So Christmas is almost here and New Year too. How many of you are still busy looking for last minute gifts, menus, ... (I'm a very last minute kind of person....).

One very important part of the holiday season is, at least for me, the family pictures. It's usually a time to get together, with your family or with your friends, and you want to cherish all these memories. Even more if you have kids, you want to capture the pure joy in their eyes when they open their gifts.

So I prepared just a few tips for you, to make your pictures even more special :-)

1- Take Photographs of all your preparation.

For me and my kids the days leading to Christmas are even more fun than the big day itself. Making the Christmas tree, the decorations, the family cooking together, ... So I certainly don't want to forget to photograph that too.

2- Take Photographs of the details.

You can take a close-up picture of your Christmas tree, of your diner table, of the turkey, the pile of gifts, ...

I like to take a close-up pic of the food. It's not only a fun memory but it does also make great background pictures if you plan to do later a photo album or scrapbook.

3- Take Candid Portraits of your family members/friends

We often look better when we are not posing so try to get more candid portraits.

Photograph people when they are arriving and greeting each other, photograph your kids when they are opening their gifts, ... My girls like to get silly with the Christmas decorations, so it's always a good opportunity for portraits too.

4- Take Black and White pics of people interacting with each others.

In my opinion black and white pictures, because there is no more the distraction of the colors, emphasize the relationships, the feelings, the emotions, ...

5- Avoid using your flash.

Unless you have a fancy external flash and are able to "bounce" it against a wall to avoid direct light on your subject, I would suggest to avoid flash all together. Most of the time you end up with red eyes or yellowish pictures (or both!!!). If you have the option on your camera, boost the ISO when you are shooting inside (800 ISO should do the trick) and you should be fine. And why not doing your group picture outside, there is more space, usually better background and the light is much better. :-)

The Real Truth About Newborn Photography smile emoticon

If you are surfing the net on a regular basis, you probably have come across a recent video attacking the newborn photography business. What was suggested in this video is so far from the truth that I feel that I need to point it out.
The whole point of the author of the clip is to suggest that newborn babies are asleep because the photographers "force" them to be asleep by using various unsavory methods.
1) What Was Said: we are said to overfeed the babies....
1) The Truth: Yes, I do ask the moms to feed their babies before I arrive, but not to overfeed them, and it's purely because a well-fed baby is happy, and a happy baby tends to sleep smile emoticon (just my 2 cents, but I think that an overfed baby would have a tummy ache and therefore be a little fussy...)
2) What Was Said: we are said to "over-heat" the babies to make them so drowsy that they sleep...
2) The Truth: Yes, we do heat the room a little (in my case, I simply reduce the A/C here in warmer Singapore), but simply because they are undressed newborn babies, and we don't want them to be cold (like in the hospital when they over-cover your babies).
3) What Was Said: the last suggestion was my personal favorite. It was said that some photographers would give sugar solutions to the babies to make them sleep...
3) The Truth: SUGAR???!!! Well, I never tried sugar on a newborn baby, but I can tell you that sugar does not make my toddlers sleep a bit! smile emoticon
So, of course I can't talk for all the photographers out there. Some are professionals--and some probably less so--but I think most ladies like me who specialise in newborn photography truly love babies, and even though you see online only the final result of a newborn session - adorable sleeping baby pics - we spend sometimes 4 hours with the babies, behind the scenes... because we don't force them to sleep! Sometimes they wake up, sometimes they eat, sometimes they cry, sometimes they even cuddle with their parents.... and the magic trick behind a sleepy baby picture is nothing more than a happy, comfortable newborn baby, and yes, newborn babies tend to sleep quite a lot when they are satisfied!!!

Good Morning! :-)

So like usual, I'm very late in keeping new posts coming on my blog. I always have plenty of excuses (moving to new continents, having a new baby, etc.), and although it's all true, it's really just life and time flying by me too fast. When I finally do take the time to post, I usually think, "oh well, it was so long ago, it does not make any sense to do it now." But this time, it's different. What I want to share with you today is more important than keeping up to date on emails, catching up on chores for work, or chasing after my little ones to make sure they have brushed their teeth. ;-)

Last weekend, I went to Batam, Indonesia.

If you are living outside Southeast Asia, chances are you have never heard of that place. Batam is a little Indonesian island quite close to the coast of Singapore (45-minute boat ride). If you are living in Singapore, you may think of Batam as a place for a weekend retreat and fun on the beach.

I, however, went there for a different and amazing reason: an Orphanage Outreach Day Trip. It was not my first time to visit an orphanage (I have had the chance to visit orphanages in the past in Africa as well), but it is always such a meaningful and overwhelming experience. What is so mind-blowing is the contrast between the life conditions and the genuine happiness of the kids. Although very young, they have already suffered more losses and heartbreak than most of us can imagine, from personal tragedies to the fallout of the recent tsunami. One girl was abandoned by her parents, possibly because she is living with a physical handicap. Another was a little boy who has endeared himself to everyone who visits in spite of mental and physical handicaps after a premature birth. These children still live in precarious conditions, but they know how to recognize happiness. The most striking thing you note when you go to this orphanage is not the poverty—although it's there, too— but rather, you notice the love, both among the children and from the caretakers.

I spent my time there mostly playing with the kids (they thought that my camera was a pretty awesome toy!!), and whatever I may have brought to them, I received so much more in return. I will always remember a little boy sitting on my lap and putting my arms around him for a much-needed cuddle. That was enough to make the trip worth it for me.

I want to share with you their smiles.

** Practical Information **

The Orphanage was founded in 2005, and right now counts 42 children and 4 helpers.

A small donation in kind or in cash can be made via volunteers (Sophie Leneveu, outreach.sophie@gmail.com, organizes an outreach there every 2-3 months), who will use it to purchase basic supplies on the day of the group visit. You could also arrange to visit in person as I did. Larger donations or special projects should be coordinated directly will the Orphanage Fund. The Betesda Orphanage is run by Bishop Zebua of the BAHTERA MISI FOUNDATION (Yayasan Bahtera Misi) in Batam. To liase directly with him, call +62 812 7045. FYI, he uses the app Tango for free calls. Currently, the orphanage is appealing for donations to assist with school fees and its reconstruction project (following a fire last year that destroyed the second floor children’s rooms). They aim to complete the new building by October this year, subject to funding.

Hi everyone,

I know, I know, once again it's been a while since my last blog post... And that after I've put in my resolutions for the new year that I will post more often!

Then again since my last post I gave birth to my third girl and moved to Singapore...so I kept myself quite busy!

Now on I will start seriously posting more, and sharing with you month after month our new adventure here in Singapore. I plan to discover lots of new places and lots of new people. :-)

In the meantime I decided to share with you the first month of my baby girl, Rose, with a mixed of lifestyle and posed pictures.

Bonjour à tous,

Vous avez été nombreux cet hiver à me demander si je faisais également des séances photos en extérieurs (pour vos loulous ou vous-mêmes). Et bien oui, maintenant que le printemps s’est bien installé ce type de sessions est de nouveau disponible.

C’est d’ailleurs très agréable à cette saison car on peut profiter du soleil sans avoir trop chaud, et quel plus beau décors qu’un champ de colza! (Bon d’accord je ne dirais pas non à un champ de lavande, mais ce n’est pas la saison et puis dans la région de Poitiers c’est quand même difficile à trouver!).

Voilà donc des images de ma première séance en extérieur de la saison! (Une prochaine très bientôt dans le blog également!).

Many of you asked me about outdoor sessions last winter (for your kids and yourselves). And now that the spring settled in the answer is yes, this type of sessions is available again.

And it's a very nice time to do that since one can enjoy the sun without being to hot, and what a best background than those yellow fields! (well okay I would not say no to a lavander's field either, but for one thing it's not the season yet, and then again Poitiers is kind of far from Provenve and lavender is quite difficult to find around here!).

In any case, below are some pictures from my first outdoor kids session of the season!

Bonjour à tous,

Cela fait des semaines (bon d’accord, des mois) que je n’ai pas pris le temps d’écrire dans mon blog. En plus je réalise que je n’ai jamais refait ma présentation en français, du coup ce soir j’ai décidé de « recommencer à zéro » !!! Bon, pas vraiment, mais au moins de me représenter à vous tous, en français…

Alors voilà. Je m’appele Catherine et je suis la photographe derrière Mermozine-Photography. Scientifique de première formation je m’étais exilée il y a déjà presque 10 ans aux USA (Washington DC) pour travailler dans la Recherche. Je suis revenue en France il y a quelques mois, sans prix Nobel, mais avec un diplôme de photographe professionnelle en poche, un petit business photo tout juste créée (et un mari et deux bébés !!). Bref, j’ai réalisé mon rêve américain et ai transformé ma passion de toujours pour la photographie en un métier que j’adore. Et je suis donc devenue photographe portraitiste professionnelle sur Poitiers (avec déplacements sur Bordeaux et Paris à l’occasion).

Ma formation de photographe m’a permis d’apprendre les techniques de studio, de faire des stages de photographie de mariage, photographie de paysage et même photographie de nourriture ! Quand j’ai commencé la photo j’aimais surtout la macrophotographie (les fleurs, les petites bébêtes – sauf les araignées !!!) et les paysages sans personne dessus. Et puis je suis devenue une maman, et cela a changé ma façon de voir et d’apprécier les choses. Du coup, maintenant ce que je préfère par dessus tout, et donc la spécialité de mon studio, ce sont les portraits de femmes enceintes, les photos de nouveau-nés et les portraits d’enfants. (bon j’aime encore les fleurs et les petites bébêtes aussi – sauf les araignées !!!) J. Et puis je me fais encore plaisir de temps en temps avec un petit peu de photos de voyage et de rue (street photography pour les connaisseurs).

J’ai commencé mon Blog il y a un peu plus d’un an maintenant. La majorité des post sont en anglais puisque Mermozine-Photography a démarré aux USA, mais j’essaie maintenant de faire dans les deux langues. Le but de mon blog est de partager quelques photos de vos séances photos, de mes voyages, des annonces (je cherche régulièrement des modèles) mais aussi de vous donner des astuces pour vous aider vous aussi chez vous a avoir des souvenirs magiques de vos petits bouts ! Comme précisé au début j’ai pris beaucoup de retard récemment, donc au programme dans les semaines à venir, des photos d’adorables bébés, des photos d’Italie (Cinque Terre), des photos de Paris, ….

So it's been quite a while since my last blog entry (I guess a good month). But I have a good excuse!

I moved.... And not a little move a few miles away, more like a big jump across the ocean.

After much packing and unpacking I've finally settled down (for a little while at least).

Mermozine-Photography was born in Washington DC ...

and I will miss each mom and each baby I worked with.

I know it's been a long time since I've updated the blog, for my defense I was busy doing lots of photo-shoots!

So let me introduce you to adorable miss E, newborn baby doll!

How to add texture to a picture with Photoshop {tutorial}

Bonjour,

So today I'm going to show you how to very easily add some texture to a picture using Photoshop 5.0.

I will demonstrate using as a example a portrait.

Here is the picture I will work on...

1- First Step: Open the picture on Photoshop! (I told you it was going to be easy :-)...).

2- Second Step: Cleaning up just a bit the picture (if necessary):

- Image

- Adjustments

- Curves: I will lift up just a little the curve, then click OK

- Filter

- Sharpen

- Unsharp Mask: Amount 98, Radius 2, Threshold 8, click OK (these numbers will change depending of the picture)

- Then on this particular portrait I found the bright colors around the subject a little distracting so I will turn them down a little, by adding some white on top of them using a Layer

-Layer

- New Layer, click OK

- Then using a big size brush I add some white on the bright colored areas

Voila!!!! I'm now ready to add some Texture!!!!

_ So now I opened my Texture Image (a scan I made from a Scrap Book Page...), and I will drag the new image on top of the first one

- If you get the same message as me on the screen, click Yes

- You now have the new image on top of the first one

- You need to change the blending mode of your new Layer to be able to see the picture below (it's set up to Normal per default). I like to use Soft Light, but play around and try them all! :-)

- At this point you can see the texture you just added but also your picture below it. I like the picture on the background but I don't want it on the face of the baby. So I use the Eraser Tool (opacity around 50%) and I erase the new Texture Layer I created on the face.

Double Et Voila!!!! In about 5 minutes I'm done!!!!

Bonjour!

When it comes to photographing our kids most of it is documenting memories. Yes we want the cute pics where everyone was posing (well as much as kids do pose :-)), but we want to tell stories, a little bit like we would write in our journal something funny they did that day. What's why when I photograph my kids on an everyday basis (see my Pics of the Day on Facebook) the most important for me is not the technical part of the photograph anymore but the story behind it.

In the example below everything happened very fast and time for me to grab my camera (I always keep it handy though!) and the action was already almost over. I then decided that it was more important for me to get several shots showing the whole story than having a single perfectly focused, exposed image! I kept shooting until the "action" was over, and at the end selected three pictures which I think represent perfectly what happened. And I love them because of what and who they represent. They are a memory of an interaction, of a good laugh I had with my kids...

One of the best time to be in Washington DC? During the Cherry Blossom Festival....

When during the festival? Well one of the best time is certainly at sunrise. Not only you will enjoy a beautiful sunrise above the Jefferson's Monument, great light the first hour after the sunrise, but you won't have to be in the crowd (if you're like me going around with a stroller, kiddos and a tripod, that may be a big thing to consider!).

And the same old tip, change angles, change perspectives, zoom in and zoom out!

Kids Photography Tip: Different Angles-Different Perspectives-One Subject

Just wanted to share a little tip with you to photograph children (or any other subject for that matter...).

You probably heard it already but it's worth saying it again: change angles, change perspectives... For example while taking photographs of your little ones don't hesitate to crawl on the floor with them to see what they see, then stand up and photograph them from above to remember later how small they were, then photograph them from different other heights!

Also don't always focus on them, focus on what they're doing. Make a close-up on their hands, eyes, and then zoom-out to get the all picture!

And the best thing is that you don't even need a fancy camera to do any of that and you will get amazing results and memories!

If every single day was a different type of photography today would have been lifestyle photography day.

I did not try to pose the kids, and they just did their thing... (to be totally honest I'm not quite sure what that "thing" may be...).

The result? Timeless siblings/kids portraiture, with an inch of wrestling, an inch of playfulness and plenty of love!

Tip of the day? Try also using the Black and White for this type of lifestyle portraits. It will give a timeless edge to your portraits (and help make the background less distracting...).

Because time goes so fast, and because I want to remember and cherish every moment I spend with my little ones, I started a new personal project: trying to make a very special photo album, a collection of their emotions.

I'm focusing on their eyes, the mirror of the soul, and will work only in black and white to avoid any distraction from the emotion itself.

The challenge... well having my camera ready all the time for one thing, and have them not noticing me (and my 100 mm macro lens!)...

The easy part.... they're able to switch mood faster than I can focus!

I spend a lot of time taking pictures of my kids, and even more time preparing for it (setting the background, making sure that the lighting is right, choosing their clothing, etc.....) and of course my little munchkin gave me her "one of a kind adorable" smile once again when I was totally unprepared and it was a huge mess all around her. My tip of the day concerns the choice of a good background for Mom to take good pictures of Baby.

The first important thing is of course the comfort of Baby, so look in your closets for warm, soft blankets.

Then select something with preferably solid colors and an interesting texture, and try to match it with baby's clothing and baby's eyes!

I love Chrysanthemums, I love their usually bright colors and their "pompon-like" shapes.

In France, they have quite a bad reputation being the flowers of choice in the fall, they are usually the flowers one would put on the family graves for the "All Saints' Day" (La Toussaint). That's why they are often associated with mourning and sadness.

But I can't find them sad. They are beautiful! And after a little surfing on the web it seems that lots of people agree with me!

Do you love taking photographs of your babies/kids?

Does your home like mine re-demonstrate the "Chaos Theory" every single day (no matter how much time you spend cleaning while your little ones are napping or at school as soon as they're back your house turns into a giant mess!)?

Are you too busy to spend hours with Mr Photoshop removing all the clutter around your child to have a nice neat portrait?

Well I have a tip for you! We all have perfect backgrounds at home to take great clean portraits.....bed sheets!

Try it and let me know how it works for you!

NB: If the light in your house is a little low and you have the option on your camera, boots the ISO (800 should do)!

I just finished an indoor studio photoshoot with a 3 months old baby girl and it reminded me what I like so much in baby/kids photography --- their spontaneity! You can hardly ask a toddler to smile on demand but with a baby it's simply impossible!

But you know what? As I was going through the pictures to edit them I could not help but notice how adorable she looks on the one where she seems a little fussy (she was getting hungry)....

ps: don't worry a few seconds later she was happily having some milk!

I think I may have some sort of writer's block (by the way, if you did not notice yet, I'm not a native english speaker, so my grammar is often far from perfect; I apologize to the purists in advance).

A little bit of background about me... I always loved photography, but until a few years ago, although I was already always with a camera around my neck, I was "focusing" exclusively on travel photography and fine art (macrophotography, still life, black and white prints that I would develop myself in the darkroom, ....). I spent hours shooting all the flowers and bugs I could come across (although avoiding carefully any spiders!) and I was sure that these were the most beautiful things in the world. And then--two years ago--I became a mom and as banal as it can sound, it truly changed not only my life but also my photography interests. I suddenly saw a different beauty, the kind that makes parents' eyes a little teary. And there it was, I was not only a photographer anymore, I became one of those.... a "mamarazzi"!

(Urban Dictionnary: "Mothers who constantly follow their children around with several cameras and video taking equipment, snapping photos at each turn and documenting each milestone or event with at least two dozen photos".)

(but don't worry I still travel and chase flowers and bugs too - although still avoiding spiders...).

As a mom, I know how fast our tiny bundles of joy grow and how much we wish to have kept more traces of each one of their milestones. That's why as a professional photographer I like to photograph the main developmental milestones of the babies' first years (the "still-all-curly" newborn baby, the 3 months old baby able to lift his(her) head when lying on his(her) belly, the 6 months old infant able to sit and then the toddler and his(her) hesitant first steps).

I will try in this blog to share with you my love of children and my passion for photography.
